It's also impossibly difficult. (Thank God for the level skip code.)
This game probably deserves its own, dedicated article exploring just how unreal it gets (it's an absolute technical masterpiece, with jaw-dropping special effects), but today, we're just going to focus on its awesomely sinister Game Over sequence.
Although you'll fight multiple villains throughout the game, Mr. Freeze is the main antagonist. He was behind a major jailbreak from Arkham Asylum (as shown in the superb intro that most definitely deserves its own "Intro to Remember" article), freeing the others to keep Batman & Robin busy while he worked on his master plan. When you get a Game Over, he carries it out.
So, not only are you treated to some gorgeous graphics, but you actually get to see what the consequences of your failure are. It's awesome.
This is a great example of making Game Overs mean something, and also using them for some additional storytelling. It's just another artistic touch that puts the Genesis version in a league of its own.
Like I said before, the game's difficulty is absolutely overwhelming, so you'll be seeing this Game Over screen a lot. Good thing it's so... cool.
